Living Water

Courtenay Puckett
We had a great solo show at the Huss Foundation . Opening Night was a huge success with over 350 people coming through the venue. Thanks to all visitors- ya'll blew me away with your kind words! I pray God will use these images to spur on his people.
There are 10 mixed media pieces in the collection. They are intended to be "read" consecutively, as a visual narrative of the Gospel, though they can stand alone. The pieces show our need, remedy, sanctification, and eternal home. I used a variety of media and marks to create mood through the symbolic illustrations. These were a joy to conceptualize!!
These are available for installations as well as purchase. Use the link here to shop for prints and originals. If you’d like it printed on canvas, I am happy to price it for you. Just email me :)
"Broken Cisterns"
Mixed Media: Acrylic, Paper, Conte on Canvas
24x48 inches
"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
Jeremiah 2:13
This piece illustrates our human desperation and need. There are many types of people, dressed in types of clothing. Some are transparent, drawn only with lines, representing the passing of time of generations. The line of people coming forward are all coming in Hope of having a refreshing drink. But when they arrive, it is disappointment. The water is murky, and polluted by the very things people set their hopes on. This piece creates a sense of hopelessness and longing for relief.
“Return”
Acrylic on Canvas
16x20 inches
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.”
Jeremiah 29:13-14
This piece represents the journey one may go on to find remedy for their longings. The person comes from a place in the background, where the colors are sullen; moving forward into the foreground where the colors are saturated. This progression shows a change of mindset for the sojourner.
“Vast Array”
Acrylic on Canvas
24x18 inches
“In the beginning God created... the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.” Genesis 1:1, 2:1
This piece illustrates the 7 days of creation. Day 1 is at the top, followed by Day 2, and so forth until the Day 7, at the bottom. Day 7 contains a circle, representing the finished work, it is complete.
“It Is Finished”
Acrylic on Canvas
36x30 inches
“It was the sixth hour and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour…Jesus said, ‘It is finished.” At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.”
Luke 23:44-46, John 19:30
The power of God's wrath can be felt in the crashing water against the rock. This is the moment when God's wrath was poured out on Jesus instead of us. Notice also the background and theme of the water. The water that was once murky (seen in Broken Cisterns) is now the clean, pure, true water for our souls' thirst. The Water is coming from the hill of Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, now available to all who call on his name to be saved.
“Peace”
Mixed Media: Acrylic, Paper, Conte, Markers on Canvas
24x24 inches
“He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we have access to the Father by one spirit.” Ephesians 2:17-18
This piece represents the chaos of humanity juxtaposed against the peace offered to us through Jesus. The position of the dove, wings outstretched and the halo behind its head, reminds us of Jesus's work on the Cross, when His arms where outstretched; making peace between man and God.
This image contains a message of hope in the midst of our worries, conflicts and prayers.
“Living Waters”
Mixed Media: Acrylic, Paper, Conte on Canvas
16x20 inches
Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
John 7:37-38
This piece shows a tree with vegitation growing at the waters edge. The tree represents a man. He is planted by the stream, which has pieces of scripture floating in it, his roots drinking in the nourishing water. The person is growing by the waters edge, by learning the teachings of Christ.
“Thrive”
Mixed Media: Acrylic, Paper, Conte on Canvas
30x30 inches
"But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.” Psalm 1:2-3
This piece illustrates the same figurative person as the previous painting, represented by the tree. Now the tree is thriving. The scriptures are a part of the tree's bark, branches, and leaves. Scripture now makes up the identity of the person and they are thriving.
“Wellspring”
Mixed Media: Acrylic and Conte on Canvas
16x20 inches
“…but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:14
This painting serves to continue the story of the previous two. Now the tree, symbolizing a man, is old. Some branches are low, weathered and humbled by the storms of life. Some have been broken off, pruned by the vine dresser. And some are raised high, still giving praise to his Maker. The tree is still planted by the deep wells of water. As the scripture above says, '...welling up to eternal life...' this artwork serves as a bridge to the thought of eternal life at the end of ones' life.
“Come”
Acrylic on Canvas
24x18 inches
“For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” John 7:8
You can see distinct brushstrokes around the perimeter of the painting. Each brushstroke represents everything our life is made of- every thought, friend, sin, place we have been, thing our hands has done. For the Christian, our entire life, entangled by sin has been washed clean by the blood of Jesus. He has made atonement on our behalf. Therefore we can come into His presence. There is no door knob on the door, showing that He is the one to open the door to us. The mystery of God is seen in the smoke. He is a Holy God we love and know, yet also He is a mystery too great for our understanding.
“He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands
Mixed Media: Acrylic, Acrylic Ink
16x20 inches
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1
This is the final piece. The symbol of the circle is depicted again, reminding us that God holds everything together and we can trust Him in his sovereignty. The iridescent colors set this piece apart from the others and is to be enjoyed just for the beauty of the colors. The simple beauty reminds us to give simple praise and thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
The Print set has been used to adorn the walls of youth rooms, fellowship areas of churches, and local faith based businesses. The Postcard set has been used as discussion starter cards with small groups and to give personal encouragement for folks in their own rooms. These are powerful images meant to spur you on and start gospel centered conversations. I know you will find the perfect place for them!
